Origin Story
In late 2018, Soha Abdou (Tenderloin Arab Women Leadership & ESL Program), Jeremiah Jeffries (Teachers 4 Social Justice), Adnan Alameri (Yemeni American Association) & Diana Pang (Chinatown Community Development Center) brought together the San Francisco City Hall Iftar Coalition to organize the first Ramadan Iftar in the historic rotunda of the San Francisco City Hall.

The Coalition
The coalition included representatives from the Arab Resource Organizing Center, San Francisco Human Rights Commission, SEIU Local 87, SF Boy & Girls Club, Teachers 4 Social Justice, Tenderloin Arab Women Leadership & ESL Program and the Yemeni American Association. The iftar was also supported by Arab American Grocers Association, Oasis Grill SF, Pure Hands, Helen Han (Boston Properties), Sunny Angulo, Legislative Aide for District 3, Chinatown Community Development Center, and Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services.

Our Guiding Principles: 

  1. Participants should be inclusive of the various aspects of the Muslim community and representative of the economic and and ethnic diversity of the community.

  2. Center working-class people and women leadership, and their voices

  3. Cost is FREE to participate, childcare is provided and family-friendly.

  4. Vendors and funders are community-based  & San Francisco-based. No corporate sponsorship. 

  5. Build community with constituents and city leadership

  6. No endorsements of politicians.

  7. This is for the community from the community with City Hall (Mayor & Board of Supervisors) 

  8. The coalition seeks to hold the annual San Francisco City Hall Ramadan Iftar in City Hall the first or second  Friday in the Month of Ramadan.
